Meet Katie - Salon Owner and Creative Director

We recently had the pleasure of speaking with Katie, the dedicated Salon Owner and Creative Director of Ray of Ginger. Despite her incredibly busy schedule, Katie generously shared her time to detail her ambitious plans for the salon over the next six months.

This ethos is, in fact, at the very root of the salon's identity. As Katie explained, the name "Ray of Ginger" is more than just a name; it's a philosophy. It encompasses the restorative value of ginger, a concept that underpins every aspect of the salon's work. From the tranquil client experience to the supportive environment for her team, everything is designed to be restorative, nurturing, and empowering. It is this unique, holistic approach that makes Ray of Ginger a true sanctuary for those seeking a space where they can not only look their best, but feel their best, too.

What inspired you to open your own salon, Ray of Ginger?

Since I was a little girl, I always knew I wanted to be a hairdresser. It’s been my dream for as long as I can remember. I was so focused and determined there was never a moment I questioned it. Opening Ray of Ginger was more than just creating a salon; it was about building a space filled with love, warmth, and a sense of belonging. Somewhere people could come not just for their hair, but to feel cared for mind, body, and soul.

What’s a key piece of advice you would give?

Always be kind. You never know what someone is going through. And never be afraid to follow your dreams even if it doesn’t go perfectly, you’ll feel proud knowing you gave it your all. Nothing has to be forever, but listening to your heart and trying is everything.

How would you describe the atmosphere and culture you’ve created for your clients?

It’s calm, welcoming, and full of heart. Like walking into a friend’s home where you can just be yourself. I want people to feel safe and looked after from the minute they walk in to long after they leave. There’s a sense of community here. We laugh, we listen, we hold a safe space for each other.

Ray of Ginger offers both hair services and wellness treatments. What inspired you to bring these two worlds together?

I’ve always believed that true beauty starts from within. Hair and beauty can lift your confidence but when you combine that with wellbeing, something deeper happens. Whether it’s through a relaxing massage, a cup of tea, or just having a moment to breathe it’s about nurturing the whole person. I wanted to create a sanctuary where people could reconnect with themselves.

What’s your personal philosophy on beauty and wellness?

It’s about how you feel, not just how you look. When we care for our energy and emotions, it reflects on the outside. For me, wellness is a mix of quiet moments, nourishing treatments, and surrounding yourself with people and things that feel good.

What do you do to unwind and relax after a busy day at the salon?

I find it hard to switch off, but being around my family and friends really grounds me. I love lighting incense, walking in nature, listening to music, and just being near water. Even something simple like meditating or sitting in the quiet. I don’t often get a quiet moment with 2 young children and running a business so when I do it’s bliss.
